Most skin type systems give you four options. Oily, dry, combination, normal. You pick one, you adjust your routine slightly, and you keep dealing with the same problems you had before.

Dr. Leslie Baumann’s system is more useful. Not because it’s more complicated, but because it’s more honest about how skin actually works.

Two axes, not four boxes

Baumann maps skin across two dimensions, not one. The first axis is hydration: how much oil your skin produces. This runs from dry to oily. The second axis is reactivity: how your skin responds to inputs, new products, environmental changes, stress. This runs from sensitive to resistant. Put those two axes together and you get four quadrants. Dry sensitive, dry resistant, oily sensitive, oily resistant. Every skin type sits somewhere in that grid, and most people’s skin has more nuance than a single label can hold. The system also accounts for the fact that your position in that grid shifts. Dry in winter, oilier in summer. Sensitive after a stressful week, more resilient when your sleep is right. You’re not one thing permanently. The Baumann system expects that.

Why this matters for a bar soap rotation

If your skin is oily and resistant, you can handle a stronger clean. Earth Salt’s mineral density and Marbled Charcoal’s clay draw are built for that quadrant. If you’re dry and sensitive, those same bars would strip you. Silky Shea and Aloe Veil are built for the opposite end. The Arrival Quiz is built on Baumann’s framework. Twenty questions, most of them behavioral rather than descriptive (what happens when you skip moisturizer, not what does your skin look like). The output is a rotation matched to where you actually sit on the grid. It takes two minutes and it’s more accurate than guessing based on a label.

Take the quiz.
