Origin
The Khewra mines of Punjab, Pakistan, the bed of an ancient sea sealed under the mountains.
Harvested
Hand-mined in room-and-pillar chambers, a method that has barely changed in centuries. More than half the salt is left standing to hold the mountain up.
Cultural impact
A prized trade good of the Punjab, with discovery legends reaching back to Alexander's army. Salt itself is the world's oldest purifier, reached for by Shinto shrines, Roman rites, and Hebrew ritual alike.
Traditional use
Brine soaks and salt scrubs to exfoliate and reset the skin, the mineral bath long before anyone bottled one.
