About Us

Most soap strips your skin on purpose.

When soap is manufactured at scale, glycerin forms naturally in the process. Glycerin is what keeps your skin soft and balanced after a shower. Most commercial soap companies remove it from the bar and sell it back to you in a bottle of lotion. One product creates the problem the other one solves.

We like feeling moist. So we keep the glycerin in.

Every Black Altar bar retains its natural glycerin. Your skin does not need to recover from your shower. It just needs the right soap.

Black Altar is a small family business in Bend, Oregon. We believe your skin is your first barrier to the world, and most of what sits on the average bathroom shelf was not made with that in mind.

Phillip is a brand designer and strategist. Sierra, his wife, is a ceramicist. Sky, Phillip’s sister, is a naturalist and a writer. She formulates her own shampoo, deodorant, and supplements, and she crafts every Black Altar recipe from that same place of care.

Sky’s recipes move from her hands to our partners, who hand-pour and cure every bar the slow way. From there, each batch is packaged and shipped out of Bend.

This is all three of us putting our best foot forward: the formulas, the objects, the atmosphere. A bathroom that makes returning to yourself feel like something worth looking forward to.
